« The most important thing is your network. »
You have probably heard this line over and over, from a counsellor or a well meaning friend. And there is some truth to it. The hidden job market really does exist: some opportunities travel through contacts, referrals, former colleagues or professional relationships before a role is ever posted publicly. That is a fact.
But that reality creates a very real problem for those who are starting their career, changing fields, arriving in a new region, making a career shift, returning to work after years away, or who simply have not built a solid professional network yet. How do you land a first chance when no one can vouch for you?
Finding a job without a network is the reality of far more people than we think. And the advice you keep hearing has a design flaw: it assumes exactly what you are missing. It is like telling someone who has no car that the easiest thing is to drive.
So let us ask the question differently. What if the problem was not you?
The number they throw at you as advice
You have surely come across it: « 80% of jobs are never posted. » The famous hidden market. It gets served to you like a pro tip: the real opportunities travel by word of mouth, so go network!
But here is what matters: whatever the exact percentage, a third, a half, more, that number is not advice. It is a confession. It says that a large share of doors open through referral, so they stay closed to those who know no one. When you are told to « network », you are being described a system built for people who already have contacts, and you are being asked to adapt to it.
You do not have a motivation problem. You are facing a screening mechanism that does not see you.
Your network is your social résumé
Think about what a résumé really does: it filters you on what you have accumulated. Degrees, years, job titles. Not on what you are worth today, but on the marks your past left on paper.
Your network does exactly the same thing, in social form. It filters you on what you have accumulated in relationships: the colleagues from your past jobs, the contacts from your school, the well placed family friends. Same logic, same blind spot. Both measure your starting point, not your value.
And both favour the same profiles: a linear path, a good background, good schools, never left their region. If you fall outside that mould, you lose twice, on paper and in the address book.
Networking from scratch: the advice that costs you
Networking is still an important strategy. But look at what the advice demands when you start from zero. Events where you know no one. Coffee chats requested from busy strangers. LinkedIn messages that go unanswered. Months of effort, with no pay and no guarantee: a full time job, unpaid, with uncertain results.
And that game does not reward skill: it rewards ease. The ease of approaching strangers, of selling yourself, of following up without getting discouraged. You can be the most reliable and hardworking person in town and deeply hate that game. It says nothing about the employee you would be.
Meanwhile, your real strength stays invisible: the way you work, your calm, your seriousness, your people skills. Exactly what an employer would want to see, and what neither a résumé nor a networking event shows.
The real question is not « how do I build a network ». It is: what is a network actually for? For one thing only: to make you visible and credible to an employer before the first meeting even happens.
Finding a job without a network: introduce yourself
Break down what a referral really passes along. When someone says « let me introduce you to Karim, you can trust him », they are not passing along a degree or a list of jobs. They are passing along information about people skills: this person is reliable, they fit in well, someone vouches for them.
Well, you can show that yourself. Thirty seconds or three minutes of video, and an employer sees your energy, the way you express yourself, your natural style, your seriousness. What a middle person would have said for you, you show directly, and better, because it is really you.
The video profile is the handshake without a middle person.
Introduce yourself in video, straight to employers
A local platform, built for the phone, where you introduce yourself in video to employers in your region, without needing to know anyone. They show themselves too: their team, their environment, their way of working. And you can talk to each other directly, human to human.
Create my video profile
Your network will come later
One day, you will have your network. It will build itself with your first local job, your first colleagues, your first clients. That is how a real network is built: by working, not by handing out cards.
But it does not have to be the toll at the entrance. What you need today is not someone to introduce you. It is a place to introduce yourself.
No one to introduce you?
Introduce yourself. Create your video profile on Joblinks and show employers who you really are.
